Apprenticeships

What does a mechatronics technician actually do? What is an industrial mechanic? Get an overview of our apprenticeships in Germany's dual vocational training system – combining practical training with us and vocational school.

Technical Product Designer (m/f/d)

You decide what the product looks like
Duration:
3½ years
School qualification:
Good intermediate school certificate (Realschulabschluss)

For machines and systems to work, design and engineering have to be right. With modern 3D CAD software you design and plan everything from machine components to complete machines. You select materials and manufacturing techniques, keep an eye on costs and technical requirements and check your designs with simulations and tests. For machine building, the specialization in machine and plant design is the right fit – among other things you create 3D models of components for machines and systems. By the way: until 2011 this profession was called “technical draftsman”.

What you'll learn
  • Creating and using technical documents
  • Planning and designing parts and products with 3D CAD software
  • Developing products – from draft to calculating components
  • Distinguishing and selecting materials and assembly techniques
  • Running tests and optimizing your designs
What you bring
  • Technical understanding – you know how motors, gearboxes and pumps work
  • Good spatial awareness and enjoyment of working on the computer
  • Good grades in math and physics
  • Care, accuracy and creativity

Mechatronics Technician (m/f/d)

A pro in three fields
Duration:
3½ years
School qualification:
Good secondary school certificate (Haupt- or Realschulabschluss)

As a mechatronics technician you build systems made of mechanical, electronic and IT components. You study circuit diagrams and design drawings, install controls, wire cables and connect electronics to pumps or valves. By the end you can assemble systems professionally, find and fix faults and explain systems to customers. The final exam has two parts; ambitious apprentices can shorten the training by up to a year.

What you'll learn
  • Welding sheets, tubes and profiles
  • Wiring assemblies and devices according to documentation
  • Assembling and disassembling machines and systems
  • Installing and configuring networks and systems
  • Building electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic controls
  • Programming mechatronic systems
What you bring
  • Interest in mechanics, electronics and IT
  • Manual dexterity
  • Good English for assembly instructions
  • Spatial awareness and an independent, careful way of working

Industrial Mechanic (m/f/d)

Building big things
Duration:
3½ years
School qualification:
Good secondary school certificate (Haupt- or Realschulabschluss)

As an industrial mechanic you are an expert in large machines and systems. You make components and assemble them into machines. If a vulcanization line stops in automotive production, it's your turn: you find the fault, repair or modify and bring the system back into operation. Whether grinding, milling or filing – you learn all metalworking techniques and pass your knowledge on to customers and colleagues.

What you'll learn
  • Getting to know materials and using them correctly
  • Making workpieces and components
  • Reading technical drawings and preparing assembly drawings
  • Assembling, commissioning and maintaining machines
  • Installing electrical components
  • Finding and fixing faults
What you bring
  • Manual dexterity and enjoyment of practical work
  • Good grades in math and physics
  • Care and good spatial awareness
  • Good communication skills to explain systems

Cutting Machine Operator (m/f/d) – Turning and Milling

Precision is what counts
Duration:
3½ years
School qualification:
Good secondary school certificate (Haupt- or Realschulabschluss)

As a cutting machine operator (Zerspanungsmechaniker) you produce precision parts on lathes, milling and drilling machines that must be accurate to a hundredth of a millimeter. Your most important tool is the CNC machine: you read the drawing, check the material, select tools and gauges, program the machine and monitor quality during production. You specialize in turning or milling systems.

What you'll learn
  • Selecting the right materials
  • Programming CNC machine tools
  • Clamping workpieces and starting up machines
  • Recognizing faults and quality defects
  • Documenting your work and results
What you bring
  • Technical understanding and manual talent
  • A good eye for detail
  • Enjoyment of working with computers
  • Good grades in math and physics

Construction Mechanic (m/f/d)

Into large metal structures?
Duration:
3½ years
School qualification:
Good secondary school certificate (Haupt- or Realschulabschluss)

You learn how drawings become real components for our machines – from the drawing to final assembly. You cut, bend and saw individual parts made of steel and sheet metal and join them together. State-of-the-art technology is at your disposal, such as laser cutting and laser welding in our sheet metal center.

What you'll learn
  • Reading technical drawings and using them for construction
  • Welding and joining components and cutting sheet metal
  • Building large structures from components
  • Programming and setting up machines
  • Handing over structures to customers and explaining operation
  • Maintaining systems, machines and tools
What you bring
  • Manual dexterity
  • Good grades in math and physics
  • Technical understanding

Electronics Technician for Automation (m/f/d)

Making production easier
Duration:
3½ years
School qualification:
Good secondary school certificate (Haupt- or Realschulabschluss)

As an electronics technician for automation you make sure many individual parts become one system in which everything runs automatically. You program and test systems, commission and maintain them, give users tips on operation and are on hand immediately when faults occur.

What you'll learn
  • Analyzing, modifying and extending automation systems
  • Installing electric drives and programming automation systems
  • Connecting components and integrating them into higher-level systems
  • Improving control loops, investigating faults and repairing systems
What you bring
  • Basic knowledge of electrical circuits and IT
  • Good grades in math and physics
  • Manual dexterity and technical understanding
  • Organizational skills and a careful way of working
